The Society of SecondsAnd so it was that we formed the Society of Seconds, an organization most humble in nature, whose membership is composed exclusively of those of us who find ourselves consistently lesser in importance to those who matter most in our lives - the Others - to someone who matters most to them - the Firsts. Our hope in this endeavor had been that we could place our fellow members above all else, become the Others in each other's lives, perhaps even ascend to the status of Firsts. We could discuss our lives, our interests, create the importance for ourselves which our Others would not give us.
Instead, we mostly talked about the Firsts.
"She is his fiancee from a faraway land, and so very beautiful," one man muses.
"Her mother, who must be consulted before either of us may venture to move," responds another.
"Every night I think, 'please, let him forget your name and think of mine instead.' It's a little like prayer," from a girl with a voice like porcelain.
"Maybe tonight he will visit me i
The Scientist INow he's churning out science the way you and I only dream we could make our words flow out onto the page. He is flicking things with spindly fingers, slicing thin cuts with a thin blade along a thin line. His is a tangible magic, something in the flecks of starlit genius in his eyes, or in the shine of the smooth dark pin that holds back his hair. Do you see the way the tools and chemicals and all manner of dead things come to life in his hands? Whatever he is researching is surely within his grasp whatever he is inventing will surely burst forth at any moment now in a shower of brilliance. He will throw up his right hand triumphantly and shout something in French.
Surely his background must be impossibly posh. His father collects bear rugs or elk heads or vice versa or both, sitting in a study that one describes in words steeped in leather and mahogany, peering over his spectacles with tired but piercing eyes. His mother is thin and fragile and heartbreakingly pretty. Both of
A Farewell For Yorick"Either the people who do balloons are gonna come down here and do balloons, or I'm gonna get balloons and do the balloons myself." These were the first words anyone had heard from the dead man's son since well, since he had become a dead man's son. But there they were. Gruff, and powerful. We were all rather startled, and some of us were quite alarmed.
Yorick was his name, of that we were reasonably certain. It had been his father's name, and his grandfather's before that, and so on and so forth (presumably). But it was in the name of the Yorick that had directly preceded him that this current Yorick marched past us with a grim look of determination on his face; it was for that Yorick that he left the funeral to raid the nearest grocery store for their stock of all varieties of the aforementioned inflatable decoration. None of us dared follow, but the gangly teenaged cashier who assisted him would breathlessly recount the tale to us later: how the dead man's son had proceeded st
You and me and this quarterIt's just you and me and this quarter
So listen -
Let's just forget everything and go.
We'll each pick a direction and then we'll flip a coin:
Heads we take on the fields of forgotten snow
Where our boots will stomp the ice
And show the sky, for a few minutes at least, that we are alive;
Tails we'll hit the railroad tracks
We'll chase the trains and outrun them or ride their spines
Or if it lands on its side and points skyward,
Baby, that's where we'll go.
We'll catch the first plane out of here
And make a life for ourselves wherever we land.
Time can't wait anymore and neither can I, so get up.
We depart at dawn.
The world's a starfish, a snowglobe in our hands.

^Nyx-Valentine arrived in our community and started whipping everyone into a frenzy with her relentless desire to bring the Artistic Nude and Fetish galleries to the fore. 9 years later, and it's safe to say that Nyx is not only a leader as a photographer in these galleries, but she has also established herself as a much saught after model. ^...
